Mookaite: The Stone Behind Our Name
Before Mookaite was a brand, it was a stone.
We came across the name through Mookaite jasper, a natural stone from Western Australia. What caught our attention was not only the name, but the colours.
Deep reds. Ochre. Mustard. Cream. Warm brown. Sometimes soft pink, sometimes almost purple.
Colours from the earth, sitting beside one another in combinations we might never have thought to make.
That was what stayed with us.
The way colours live together
What we loved was not a perfect palette. It was the unexpectedness of it. Colours flowing into one another, patterns without a fixed rhythm, no two stones quite alike.
It felt close to the way we think about design.
A colour is never quite alone. It changes with what surrounds it. Something quiet can become vivid. Something bold can soften. Often, it is the relationship between colours that gives a drawing its life.
We return to those relationships across our designs. Sometimes through the warmth of Terracotta. Sometimes through the curves and overlapping colours of Algae Dance. The subjects change, but the pleasure is the same: discovering what happens when colour meets colour, when a line begins to move.
The stone did not give us a formula.
It gave us a name for something we already felt.
From something found to something worn
There is something reassuring about a stone. Its weight. Its texture. The feeling that it comes from somewhere.
Silk has a different presence, but it asks us to notice too.
A drawing changes when the scarf folds. Colours catch the light. Part of a pattern disappears, then returns with a movement.
What begins on the page becomes something personal.
That matters to us. Our scarves are not only images printed on fabric. They carry stories, but leave room for the person wearing them. A mood. A memory. A way of feeling that day.
Designed in Switzerland and made in Italy, each piece takes shape through drawing, colour, material and craftsmanship.
We do not try to make silk look like stone. Nor does every design return to the same earthy palette.
What stayed with us was something more open: a curiosity about colour, a love of unexpected combinations, and the wish to make something that feels as good to wear as it does to look at.
Perhaps that is why the name stayed.
Mookaite began as something we found.
The rest is what we make of it.
