Beneath the Surface

I often wonder what is happening beneath the surface.

The sea. A lake. A river.

From where we stand, we see blue. Green. Grey, sometimes. Reflections of the sky.

But below, another world is moving.

Algae bend, curl and stretch with the water. They don't fight the current. They follow it. They dance.

I imagine their colours changing constantly. With the morning light. The depth of the water. The season. The green of a lake. A dark sea at night. A reef glowing beneath the sun.

Perhaps that's why I kept drawing the same movement again and again.

Curves. Waves. Colours overlapping, disappearing, returning somewhere else.

I wasn't trying to draw algae exactly.

I was drawing the movement I imagined beneath the surface.

Night. Reef. Dune. Drift. Four versions of the same dance.

And then, this underwater dance became a pareo.

There is something about a pareo that I have always loved. Not the object itself, the gesture. The way you wrap it around you. Loosely. Without thinking too much. The knot is never perfect, and that's exactly right.

You get up from your towel. Sunglasses on. Wet hair, probably. The swimsuit is still the same. But something has shifted.

You feel dressed. Not dressed dressed. Just enough.
